We stumbled upon this by accident and were very impressed by the restaurant. We had the set menu which was a bargain and would definitely like to go back to sample their steak! Excellent service and delicious food. Excellent wine list.

Visited Goodman on Saturday 13th December 2008, a very wet and miserable night, but we were made to feel very welcome. The food was excellent, Glaswegian waiter very pleasant and a really nice place to eat! We had a really good night!

At last a second place in London to get a great quality meat cooked with care and skill (Hawksmoore being the other one). I am looking forward to going back when the British beef has finished ageing. Agree re: the spinach - best I have ever had (including the US) and thoroughly recommend the US Ribeye until the British beef is ready. Simple formula this place - great food, greast wine, great caring service and good prices. Go there.

Somewhat at a loss on my Monday night of somewhere to take my lady on her 30th birthday having fufilled all celebrations publicly on the Saturday, I decided to turn my attention to a somewhat peculiar concept, a Russian Steakhouse. Goodman was the name and Maddox Street the location. After making my on-line reservation for 7pm we arrived to a warm and wonderfully decorated somewhat 50's Chicago feel restaurant. The first thing i noticed was the ability of the staff to make you feel welcome, told we could sit where we liked we choose further back as to avoid the thought of the cold.

The menu presented us with a fresh challenge, starters all coming in at 7.50 and the business end being the steaks all @ 25.00. There was the choice of 5 different cuts from 2 different countries and the promise of more to come as early as the 27th of November. The Australian meat came in Fillet, Ribeye or Striploin(for those uneducated seak eaters...sirloin.) The USDA came in the form of wonderfully marbled Ribeye or Striploin. Having been displayed the meat and having a informal discussion with our Scottish waiter , my lady felt emboldenend to go for something other than the fillet. Why I say challenge because for the first time i felt not governed by price of the meat as all came in the same bracket, i choose what i wanted...... refreshing.

I started with the Salmon Carpaccio and the lady with the Veloute of Jerusalem Artichoke. The carpaccio was excellently fresh with a smuttering of passion fruit, slight complaint that it was just a bit too much lemon, but at the price and the quality nothing to dampen the moment. The Veloute was excellent, a touch of spice but not overwhelming and finished immaculately with truffle oil.

But this is not why we were here. So after a short break the Meat arrived. I plumped for the Ribeye USDA cooked medium as advised by our man from Scotland and the lady for an Australian Striploin cooked Medium Rare. WE opted for the reliable Chips and Creamed Spinach both of which were of excellent standard. The Creamed Spinach especially so, as so many places seem to make a hash of this. It seemed to be finished with a touch of Gruyere, making it so god we needed to add another one. The steaks were both cooked to perfection and tasted even better. We were told that they cook them in a Josper grill which gives them the amazing chargrilled flavour and at the same time keeping all those meat juices inside just for you. A testament to the staek is that my lady polished hers off and still had the guts to ask me for a slither of mine. Unheard of. I thought the USDA was the better for sure, but the Australian maintained a consistency which cannot be knocked. Possibly the best steak in London i thought.

Dessert became a mission as we felt so well fed, but we were talked into a Creme Brulee to share which was laden with vanilla and crisp on the top and actually very faultless, as so many can be wronged. But i feel i could not truly appreciate as i was having my meat sweats.

The wine list was extensive and i needed a little guidance, i finished with the Clos Henri Pinot Noir of New Zealand. Light enough for the lady but not to light for the meat. Delicious.

The bill came in at 125 for two including service, very fair for the quality of the cuts and the standard of service. Really enjoyed and have already booked for the boys christmas dinner out. By then the 800g Dryaged British monster will be ready...........
